Yesterday 13 Ladies turned up to play in the inaugural Sunday Winter Medal. Despite foggy conditions throughout the morning, the fog lifted in time for the players to tee off at 1.30pm. Although wet underfoot, it was a dry and calm day for golf, if not a little cold. The winner was Anne Terrey who had 30.5 shots.

The next Sunday Winter Medal will be on Sunday, 20th November with a tee off at 1.30pm..

Our final Greenlees match for the 2011 season was finally played today at Greenock with the team from Bothwell Castle being the visitors. Inclement weather last month meant the Greenock course was unplayable on the first date.

Despite a reasonable forecast today, the weather felt distinctly Autumnal as the players took to the fairways. A cold, strong northerly breeze proved testing and frequent squally showers spread across the course during the afternoon making conditions rather unpleasant.

Unfortunately the last game of the season was to end in defeat for the Greenock team.

The final result Greenock 4 - Bothwell Castle 5.

Some photos from after the game can be seen below.

Our second rescheduled Greenlees this season, an away game at Cathcart Castle, was eventually played today. The previous match last month had to be curtailed due to thunder and lightening.

Today the weather was not quite as dramatic - a dry and overcast day with a few spells of sun. Most importantly, it stayed dry. Despite the strong breeze, it became very humid. Although there had been a lot of rain over the last few weeks, the course was looking in great shape.

The match resulted in a defeat for Greenock. The final result was Cathcart Castle 6.5 Greenock 2.5.

The Ladies were amongst the prizewinners with Donna Jackson winning the Sandy Sinclair Salver with 37 points which was for the highest Nett Stableford Points. Anne Laing won the prize for the highest Stableford points in her team.

For the second time this season, the Greenlees team headed down the M77 for their rearranged match against East Renfrewshire Golf Club. The previous match in June had been rained off on the day due to heavy rain.

Today the conditions were somewhat more pleasant although strong winds added to the rather Autumnal chill in the air. It stayed dry until later in the afternoon when a few heavy showers developed.

The final result was East Renfrewshire 7 - Greenock 2.

It was third time lucky yesterday when we held our Captain's Flag Day competition. The previous two attempts had been washed out due to rain, but fortunately yesterday was a lovely calm and dry day for golf.

A total of 24 players took to the fairways with the aim of taking the Scottish Rampart flag as far as possible down the fairway with their allotted handicap strokes.

At the end it was a photo finish for the prizes. The winner was Cath Forbes who took the Flag to the gully at the 18th and just edged ahead of the runner up, Fiona Cook who also reached the gully.

Our Greenlees team headed up the M8 today to Cathcart Castle for their next match. Conditions were idyllic when the matches got underway at 1pm - the sun was shining, there was no breeze and conditions were perfect. Nobody could have guessed what was to come.

Around mid afternoon the sun started to dim and, the skies darkened ominously. As the leading matches reached the half way stage, a large crack of thunder fell across the course. Within 5 minutes another loud thunderclap and then a bolt of forked lightening lit up the sky, followed by more cracks of thunder. Players were already hurrying off the course as the klaxon sounded for stoppage of play. Soon the heavy rain started but by then everyone was safely inside and off the course.

After discussion, the game was abandoned and the match rescheduled to Tuesday, 27th September. Hopefully the sun will be shining on the 27th.

Below are a few photos from the match.

The annual Captain v Secretary match took place today on what was a very pleasant golfing day - humid, no wind, and no midges. As always, the individual matches were very keenly contested, but it was the Secretary's team led by Jessie McKillop that ran out the winners over the Captain's team by 3 - 2.

In the evening the Ladies enjoyed a lovely meal in the Clubhouse.

Even though today was the Glorious 12th, the weather was anything but glorious for golf this afternoon for our Greenlees game at home against Lenzie.

Mist was already lurking higher up on the course as the matches got underway at 1pm. When the players reached the 6th and 7th holes, the flags and indeed other golfers were impossible to see due to the mist lying thickly over the course - bright waterproofs were the order of the day. Even though it was damp underfoot and overhead, it felt very humid and by the 8th hole the skies had brightened and the mist had lifted.

Despite the heavy rain for the last couple of days, the course was looking in remarkably good condition with both fairways and greens holding up well. Everyone seemed to enjoy the games despite the inclement weather.

The final result was Greenock 6 - Lenzie 3.

Today was Final's Day at Greenock Golf Club and for once the weather was beautiful. With the sun shining all day, the conditions were ideal for golf.

Once again the Ladies Final was between the defending champion Linda McDougall and Dorothy Fisher. Linda's excellent short game was the deciding factor on what were fast greens and the game finished on the 15th green with Linda winning 4 & 3.

Thanks to everyone who followed the game and supported both players.

It was more "Singing in the Rain", than "Straight Down the Middle" today for the Greenlees team at the away match at East Renfrewshire Golf Club.

Despite today being Midsummer's Day, the weather was the only winner with the game being postponed due to persistent rain throughout the morning. Puddles were starting to form on the fairways and greens and the decision was taken to reschedule the game to a later date.

The new date for the match is Tuesday, 20th September............hopefully the sun will be shining.

Our disappointing summer weather was again in evidence today with our annual Captain's Flag Day competition scheduled for today. Despite a promising sunny start early on, the skies soon darkened and eventually the rain arrived during late morning. Particularly heavy bursts of rain around lunchtime led to the decision to postpone the competition.

Even though the weather was disappointing, our Captain, Moira Paul hosted a very enjoyable afternoon tea in the clubhouse for some of the long standing lady members. Delightful baking including ginger torte, fairy cakes, meringues, and gingerbread soon made everyone forget about the weather.

At night the 20 Ladies who were due to play in the afternoon, came up and enjoyed a delicious meal.

The Flag Day competition well be rescheduled to another day.

The Greenlees team headed to East Ayrshire today for their game at Loudoun Gowf Club, Galston. The ongoing unseasonable weather continued with heavy thundery showers (fortunately no thunder) interspersed with very pleasant sunny spells. Waterproofs were on and off all afternoon. The course was in immaculate condition, and the meandering burns around the course made for an interesting days golf.

The final result was Loudoun Gowf 6.5 - Greenock 2.5.

Today we held our annual Ladies Open Day. As in previous years it was a Greensome competition and altogether 76 ladies took to the course. Although rain was forecast for the morning, it stayed dry until a brief shower during the middle of the afternoon. It felt very cold and the strong wind made it feel even colder - certainly not summer weather.

The overall winners were Mo Neilson (Greenock) and Ibby Russell (Largs Kelburn) who were the only ladies to break 70 with a very commendable 68.2 net. Well done ladies.

Our raffle today raised a grand sum of £360 and this will be donated to Ardgowan Hospice, Greenock.

Many thanks to our main sponsor A.P. Jess and Sons and also to all our other sponsors who helped to make today such a success

In the aftermath of yesterday's storm force winds across Scotland, blustery conditions were still very evident today when we played our third Greenlees game at home against Lanark. Apart from branches and twigs on the fairways, the main damage was on the 18th fairway where 2 large trees had blown down across the fairway. Despite the wild, windy and wet conditions, the sun did shine at times during the match. Newly cut greens made for fast greens making putting a challenge. The final result was Greenock 5 - Lanark 4.

Below are pictures of the fallen trees across the 18th fairway.

This afternoon we played our first home Greenless match this year with a game against Cawder Golf Club. Conditions early in the afternoon were fine with the sun making it feel like Spring. Soon however huge threatening black clouds emerged across the Clyde and all the matches had to cope with two very heavy hail showers which made playing even more of a challenge. The final result was Greenock 6 - Cawder 3.

Below are some photos from the meal after the game.

The wonderful dry and settled spell of weather held on for our first Greenlees game of the season today which was an away fixture at Old Ranfurly, Bridge of Weir. With no rain for a couple of weeks, there was plenty of run on the course but the strong easterly breeze made for testing conditions. The final result was Old Ranfurly 7 - Greenock 2.

Royal Wedding Competition

Today the Ladies hosted their own Royal Wedding celebration to commemorate the wedding of William and Kate last week. The Ladies held a Stableford competition and 19 Ladies took to the fairways in the afternoon on what proved to be a most enjoyable day. Although the sun shone all day a strong breeze got up in the afternoon making good scoring a challenge for all the competitors.

The overall winner was Kerri McGill with an excellent 39 Stableford points. McTear's auctioneers in Glasgow very kindly donated the prize and below Kerri can be seen being presented with her prize by Alison Clements from McTear's auctioneers.

Hailstones and gale force winds greeted the ladies today for our first competition of the 2011 playing season - a 14 Hole Stableford. With conditions more akin to Winter than Spring, only 2 competitors braved the elements.

With Spring being just around the corner, hopefully conditions will be more agreeable for golf in time for next Thursday's competition

The overall result was:-

1st: Linda McDougall - 21 points

2nd: Anne Terrey - 11 points

Last night around 50 people attended our annual Cheese & Wine Evening. Wine flowed freely and a wonderful array of cheeses, dips, biscuits and tasty vegetables were on offer. Our compere Janice Aviss ran a selection of quizzes throughout the evening, and great fun was had trying to work out the answers. Fixtures lists and diaries were very much in evidence in organising partners for the forthcoming season. All in all, it was a most enjoyable night and a great evening to herald the start of the new season next week..

Here are a selection of photos from the evening

The new season is just around the corner, as today we played our 2nd round tie of the Mail on Sunday competition - we got a bye in the 1st round. Our match was a home game against a team from Skelmorlie golf club, who last year reached the final stages of the competition to play in Spain. Our team was Linda McDougall, Dorothy Fisher, Mo Neilson, Sandra Macdougall and Kerri McGill.

Despite more snow falling on the course yesterday, conditions were remarkably good for golf. The sun even made a brief appearance from behind the dark clouds overhead. It felt cold later in the afternoon as the wind got up, but everyone was well wrapped up and braved the elements.

Unfortunately the Greenock team lost the game and the final score was Greenock 1 - Skelmorlie 4.
